VectorAxis vs Cloudflare AI Gateway
Cloudflare AI Gateway has grown into a real control plane — it now has caching, dynamic routing, unified billing, DLP and safety guardrails, and the core gateway is free on Cloudflare’s edge, which is a genuinely strong offer. The honest split: if you are already on Cloudflare and your safety needs are met by prompt/response moderation plus DLP, it is hard to beat on price and scale. VectorAxis is the better answer when guardrails need to be broad — 31 validators, not one moderation model — and when you want versioned prompt management and semantic caching in the same product, without tying your gateway to the Cloudflare ecosystem.

What Cloudflare AI Gateway is
Cloudflare AI Gateway is an AI application control plane that sits in front of your model calls. It offers caching, rate limiting, retries and model fallbacks, dynamic routing, analytics and logging, Data Loss Prevention, and Guardrails (prompt/response safety via Llama Guard on Workers AI). It supports bring-your-own-key, forwarding your app’s auth headers, and Unified Billing where Cloudflare holds the provider keys. The gateway’s core features are free; you need a Cloudflare account.
At a glance
| VectorAxis | Cloudflare AI Gateway | |
|---|---|---|
| Price of the gateway | Free tier, then $40/month Pro for the platform features. | Core gateway features (analytics, caching, rate limiting, DLP) are free; you pay for Workers AI when guardrails run, and log volume is capped by plan. |
| Guardrails — breadth | 31 validators across PII, security (prompt injection, jailbreak, secrets, SQL, web sanitization), content safety, format/schema and quality. | Guardrails evaluate prompts and responses with Llama Guard 3 (8B) on Workers AI, plus Data Loss Prevention. Effective for safety/DLP; a narrower set than a full validator catalogue. |
| Prompt management | Versioned prompt templates, labels, test cases and a playground. | Not part of the gateway. |
| Caching | Exact-match and semantic caching (pgvector cosine similarity), per-request TTL. | Response caching at Cloudflare’s edge for repeated requests — fast and free; not a semantic (similarity-based) cache. |
| Unified billing / credits | Platform keys resell OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and DeepSeek at a 5% service fee. | Unified Billing holds provider keys and bills centrally, with a 5% fee on credit purchases and inference passed through. |
| Bring your own keys | Yes — BYOK virtual keys, encrypted at rest, with per-key allowlists and spend limits. | Yes — BYOK per request, header pass-through, or Unified Billing; keys can live in Cloudflare Secrets Store. |
| Routing & fallbacks | Single, weighted load-balance, fallback chains (up to 5) and conditional routing. | Retries, model fallbacks and dynamic routing between providers. |
| Multimodal at the gateway | Audio, images, files, batches and the Responses API through the same gateway and key. | Proxies multimodal provider endpoints; not a files/batches control plane of its own. |
| Scale & edge | Managed service on standard cloud infrastructure. | Runs on Cloudflare’s global edge network — a serious reliability and latency advantage, and a natural fit if you already run on Cloudflare. |
| Ecosystem coupling | Standalone — no dependency on a particular cloud or platform account. | Requires a Cloudflare account and is most valuable inside the Cloudflare/Workers ecosystem. |
When Cloudflare AI Gateway is the better choice
There are real cases where we are not the right answer. If any of these describe you, use Cloudflare AI Gateway:
- You are already on Cloudflare. If your apps run on Workers or you already use Cloudflare, the gateway is right there, free, on the same edge, with keys in Secrets Store. That integration is worth a lot and we can’t match it.
- Free at the edge is the priority. The core gateway costs nothing and runs on one of the largest networks in the world. For caching, rate limiting and analytics at scale, that is a very strong offer.
- Your safety needs are prompt/response moderation plus DLP. Llama Guard plus Data Loss Prevention covers the common cases well. If you don’t need format/schema, quality or the wider validator set, their guardrails may be all you need.
- You want edge-native latency and reliability. Running the gateway on Cloudflare’s network is a genuine performance advantage a standard managed service does not have.
When VectorAxis is the better choice
- You need broad guardrails, not just moderation. 31 validators cover PII, prompt injection, jailbreak, secret leakage, toxicity, topic restriction and schema/format validation on input and output — well beyond a single safety model plus DLP.
- You manage prompts as a team. Versioned templates, labels, test cases and a playground are part of VectorAxis. Cloudflare AI Gateway has no prompt-management layer.
- Repeat-but-not-identical queries dominate your traffic. Semantic caching matches on similarity, not exact bytes, so paraphrased questions still hit the cache — something edge response caching does not do.
- You don’t want your gateway tied to one platform. VectorAxis needs no Cloudflare account and no particular cloud, so it stays neutral if your infrastructure changes.
Common questions
Is Cloudflare AI Gateway free, and is VectorAxis worth paying for over it?
Cloudflare AI Gateway’s core features are free (you pay for Workers AI when guardrails run, and log volume is plan-capped). Whether VectorAxis is worth paying for depends on what you need beyond the free core: a broad guardrail catalogue (31 validators vs a safety model plus DLP), versioned prompt management, and semantic caching. If those matter, VectorAxis adds them in one product; if they don’t, Cloudflare’s free gateway is an excellent choice and we’ll say so.
Does Cloudflare AI Gateway have guardrails?
Yes — this is a recent and real capability, so it would be wrong to claim otherwise. Cloudflare Guardrails evaluate prompts and responses using Llama Guard 3 (8B) on Workers AI, alongside Data Loss Prevention. The difference is breadth: VectorAxis ships 31 validators spanning PII, security, content safety, format/schema and quality, whereas Cloudflare’s guardrails centre on prompt/response safety and DLP.
Do both offer unified billing / credits?
Yes, and the fee is the same — roughly 5% on credit purchases with provider inference passed through. Cloudflare’s Unified Billing holds provider keys and bills centrally; VectorAxis platform keys resell OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and DeepSeek at a 5% service fee. Both also support bringing your own provider keys.
Can I run VectorAxis without a Cloudflare account?
Yes. VectorAxis is standalone and requires no Cloudflare account or any particular cloud. Cloudflare AI Gateway requires a Cloudflare account and is most valuable when your stack already lives on Cloudflare — if it does, that coupling is an advantage rather than a cost.
